Deep, rich red-brown bakelite beads, the color of fine cognac. The round beads are softly faceted with a glowing radiance. These graduated bakelite beads are hand knotted on brown silk and finished with a hidden drilled and threaded bakelite clasp. These beads conjure up the spicy warmth of autumn. Circa 1930.
Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and its substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
