Rich red-brown bakelite beads, glowing like amber in the sun. The softly faceted, graduated beads are hand-knotted on silk and finished with a gold-filled filigree clasp. This necklace recalls the spicy warmth of autumn leaves. Circa 1920.
Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed in 1909 by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
Details: The necklace is 28" long. The beads graduate in size from 5.6mm to 17.6mm in diameter. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your antique and vintage jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
