Fantastic Deco-era Polynesian motif clamper bracelet in translucent red Bakelite. The oval bracelet hinges at the back and opens in the front. Twin tropical flowers bloom across the top of the piece. Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
